Puzzle Agent (also referred to as Nelson Tethers: Puzzle Agent) is an adventure and puzzle game produced by Telltale Games in collaboration with Graham Annable. This was the first game coming from Telltale’s pilot project and was released on June 30, 2010. Developers have taken inspiration from renowned works like David Lynch’s, Stanley Kubrick’s, and the Coen brothers.
What is the game about?
The Scoggins Eraser Co. has been receiving inquiries from the White House, but all that’s being sent back are mysterious puzzles. Enter Nelson Tethers from the U.S. Department of Puzzle Research, who’s been sent to investigate the strange happenings in Scoggins.
Tethers will be put to the test, facing brain-twisting puzzles like mazes, riddles, and logic games at every turn. He soon discovers that these puzzles are intimately connected to the town’s strange behavior, secret societies, and other peculiarities. As Tethers delves deeper, he realizes that even the gnomes are involved.
Brought to life with the creative narrative and visuals of indie comic artist Graham Annable and Telltale’s signature storytelling style, Puzzle Agent promises to challenge, captivate, and engage players in more ways than they can imagine.
Gameplay
Puzzle Agent features a linear adventure game structure, where players navigate through dialog trees with other characters. Solving puzzles is a key aspect of the game, with some items or dialog choices leading to brain teasers. The puzzles are diverse, ranging from jigsaws to mathematical and logic problems, each with a brief description of the objective.
Players are given the option to request three hints for each puzzle, which they can obtain by using pieces of chewing gum they find around the town. The gum is in high demand, so players must collect it wisely.
Even if your answer is correct, your answer wouldn’t be approved. Players must send their answers to headquarters for approval. It might be rejected as well. If approved, players are scored based on the number of hints used and failed attempts, represented in taxpayer dollars.
