The Cuphead project began in 2010 in the residences of the creators, Chad Moldenhauers, Jared Moldenhauers, and Jake Clark. The Moldenhauer brothers grew up watching the same movies as their parents, which was primarily 1930s films. This, as well as their love of games, influenced Cuphead’s gorgeous, surrealistic design look.

What is the game about?
Cuphead and his brother Mugman get themselves into a financial mess as a result of their excessive casino gambling. From not any ordinary casino but the Devil’s Casino and they’ve been put to the test by the Devil.
The loss from gambling has brought them to a point where to revive, they must assist the devil in collecting contracts of the lost souls residing in Inkwell Isle or else they will perish. In the end, the brothers can either choose to give the Devil all the lost soul contracts and become a part of his team or they could choose to say no. If they choose to say no, the brothers will have to fight the devil.
Gameplay
There are a series of levels in Cuphead each connected to one with rounds of continuous boss fights. The stages are accessed through a top-down perspective which creates overworld nostalgia of an action role-playing game. Using coins acquired from the run-and-gun levels, you can purchase extra weapons and “Charms” from the shop. Charms provide special skills for the player, such as an additional life.
Features of the game
With such a novel plotline, the game’s features must measure up to high expectations. The following is a list of Cuphead’s features:
- Unique Animation
The game’s animations are based on cartoons from the 1930s. Each character’s colors and expressions have a charm that no other game has. This game has masterfully recreated the appearance of cel-animation in video games.
- World Map
This aids in understanding the game’s overall presentation in terms of location. With the use of this map, you can pinpoint all of the secret spots as well as where the coins are buried.
- Mix of ammunition and attacks
There are many different types of ammunition available for handguns like characters firing from their fingers, spread shots, a charge explosion, or a boomerang round. There are six types of handguns in total, each with a secondary attack attached to a meter that you can fill when you successfully hit the enemy with a shot. You may also get meter by parrying pink missiles and foes, which requires you to leap towards an enemy and then tap jump again just as the monster is about to hit you.
- Bosses-Devil’s acquaintances
Every boss battle has several phases or forms. With each new phase, bosses will alter shape, position, and conduct. No matter how experienced you are with the fight, the potential for many devastating combinations keeps you on your toes when bosses begin to mix multiple strikes at once. This part of the game highlights your fear of uncertainty and makes the game thrilling as ever.
- Plotline of the battle after death
After your death, you can see the entire plotline of the game you played. You can analyze your progress and understand the value of the ammunition you carried.
- Two-player local co-op
You can play as two players, with Mugman as the second player (brother of Cuphead.) Though this may increase the game’s complexity, there’s no harm in trying it. Who knows, you might be able to improve your game by using this feature.
To note: Cuphead can carry two weapons, a bonus power and a special attack at all times.
